PIR floodlights, wall lights and garden lighting explained — how to light your Liverpool home safely, legally and without annoying the neighbours.
Choose the right fitting
Wall lights give an attractive wash of light across brickwork and are ideal for front elevations. PIR floodlights are better for driveways, side alleys and back gardens where you want light only when something moves.
Look for an IP rating of at least IP44 for anything exposed to weather, and warm-white LED (around 3000K) for a softer, more welcoming look than harsh blue-white.
Wiring it properly
Outdoor lighting should be supplied from a suitably protected circuit with RCD protection, using armoured or correctly routed cable and weatherproof glands. Garden lighting run on an extension lead is an accident waiting to happen.
Be a good neighbour
Aim floodlights downwards, keep sensor time settings short, and avoid pointing fittings into windows. Well-planned lighting improves security without causing nuisance.
